The topic of the privatization of the Bulgarian tobacco monopoly company has been in the news continuously over the past few years. On the one hand tobacco production is a strategic sector to Bulgaria both economically and socially and it is therefore of particular importance who will own the holding and control the industry. On the other hand, Bulgartabac is among the monopoly companies considered, along with the energy companies and the Bulgarian Telecommunications Company, as one of the "pearls" of the Bulgarian economy.
